What is Profhilo?

If you’re looking for treatment options for non-surgical facelifts, then you may have heard people talking about Profhilo.

But what is Profhilo? How does it work?

Let’s take a look!

Profhilo is an injectable skin remodelling treatment that is used for its subtle but immediate hydrating and skin tightening results.

The product has won multiple aesthetics awards and is loved by beauty editors and celebrity facialists the world over due to its almost-instant and long-lasting results.

What is Profhilo used for?

The treatment targets skin that lacks volume and elasticity, making it ideal for anyone over the age of 30 who is experiencing some skin laxity, crepe-like skin or fine lines and wrinkles.

Although it’s most commonly used on the face, it can also work well on the neck, décolleté, arms, knees and hands.

After Profhilo treatment, you will notice that your skin looks and feels smoother, firmer, more hydrated and radiant. In fact, your skin quality should improve for up to six months.

How does Profhilo work?

The product contains one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid (HA) on the market but it isn’t a dermal filler (which is the aesthetic treatment most associated with HA) or a wrinkle-relaxing injection.

Instead, Profhilo might be best described as a “bio-remodeller” in that it stimulates natural healing processes within your body. The treatment works in two phases, hydrating your skin and then stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin (a process known as neocollagenesis).

As you may already know, HA is a naturally-occurring substance in our skin, joints and connective tissues. It holds 1000 times its weight in water and its primary roles are to retain and bind moisture to the skin and to aid collagen production. This is what Profhilo taps into.

How is Profhilo different to HA-based dermal fillers?

Without going too deeply into the science here, the ingredients in Profhilo are thermally-bonded (i.e. using heat) rather than chemically-bonded, which is how dermal fillers are made.

This process changes the composition and use of the HA, making it perfect for hydrating the skin rather than filling smaller areas.

As a result, Profhilo offers a runnier, gel-like substance that – when injected – smoothly spreads out and is absorbed within a 2cm radius of the injection site. It doesn’t need to be massaged or leave lumps or nodules.

Due to each injection covering a larger surface area, you would typically need just 10 injections with ultra-fine needles to treat your entire face.

Is Profhilo safe to use?

As HA occurs naturally in the human body and the product doesn’t use any synthetic chemicals, Profhilo is effortlessly metabolised, causing no known long-term side effects.

In the short-term, the only known side effects are that a small percentage of people experience bruising, redness or swelling at the injection sites but this self-corrects within a couple of days.

Does that mean that anyone can have treatment with Profhilo?

As with most injectable treatments, we would recommend that you don’t have a Profhilo treatment if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

Also, it should be avoided if you are allergic to hyaluronic acid.

What does the treatment involve and how long do Profhilo results last?

A Profhilo treatment only takes between 10 and 30 minutes to administer. Our Aesthetics Nurse Practitioner needs to inject just below your skin’s surface at approximately 10 points in your face to administer the product to the whole area.

Other parts of your body such as your hands, neck or décolleté may need a different amount.

You should notice that your skin starts to look more hydrated and luminous within just three to five days. Over the following few weeks, Profhilo will start to stimulate your skin’s collagen and elastin production, creating a gentle skin tightening effect.

You will need a second treatment four weeks after treatment one. The maximum effect of Profhilo is usually seen two months after that second treatment and should last for approximately six months. You can then choose to have a follow-up treatment with Profhilo to maintain the results.

Does Profhilo require any downtime?

The downtime with Profhilo is minimal. After approximately 30 minutes here at Medikaur, you should be able to return to your normal ‘light’ activities, including driving.

We do recommend that you avoid wearing make-up for 24 hours and that you take a day off from strenuous physical exercise, such as visiting the gym or playing your favourite sport.

Avoid saunas or a steamy bath, as well as intense sun of UV light, for three to four days.

Can Profhilo achieve a non-surgical facelift?

A Profhilo treatment will gently lift and tighten loose skin; the effect it creates is subtle, natural-looking but transformative. It isn’t as drastic as a surgical facelift by any means but fans of Profhilo enjoy how radiant, smooth and hydrated it makes their skin look and feel.

One of the many benefits of Profhilo is that it can be used on its own or in conjunction with other aesthetics treatments such as dermal fillers, laser treatments or wrinkle-relaxing injections.
