5 ways to define your jawline without surgery
A well-defined jawline, especially squarer in shape (particularly for men) is very much a current Western beauty standard. In other parts of the world – for example, in China – a very thin chin and jawline with a more ‘V’ shape may be preferable.
Whatever the shape of the jaw, people want definition rather than loose skin and jowls.
Of course, human skin gets looser as we get older. Gravity and the constant movement of our facial muscles starts to take its toll, dropping our facial tissues and weakening the definition of our jaw and neck.
No wonder so many of us are seeking non-surgical options for creating a better jawline.
So, what are your treatment options and how can we help here at Medikaur?
1. Wrinkle-relaxing injections
The masseter muscle is the strong, thick rectangular-shaped muscle that runs from just below the cheekbone to the lower jaw to help us chew and eat effectively. In some people, this muscle can be large and overdeveloped, giving the jaw a softer, more rounded appearance.
We can use wrinkle-reducing injections in targeted areas to temporarily relax the masseter muscles and slightly reduce their size. This gives your jaw a slimmer, more defined appearance, increasing the V-line that is often associated with more feminine features. By reducing the size of the masseter muscles, your cheekbones will also look more prominent, which is a youthful facial characteristic.
2. Nefertiti neck lift
We can also use wrinkling-reducing injections to perform a Nefertiti neck lift. Let’s look at why this treatment might be needed first and then we’ll explain how it works.
We all have the Platysma in our neck – this is a thin, sheet-like muscle that runs from under the jaw, down our neck and over our collarbones. The strong Platysma muscle enables us to open our mouths; turn down our lips to express sadness, horror, etc.; and also plays a vital role in protecting our airways from compressing during strenuous activity.
From an aesthetic perspective, the strong sheet of Platysma muscle can end up pulling the facial tissues around the jaw downwards, a problem that becomes more evident as we get older. The muscles can also give the neck a corded look or create bands across the neck that can be quite ageing in appearance.
Injecting small amounts of wrinkle relaxing injections into the Platysma muscle relaxes the downward pull slightly, subtly lifting to jaw and giving you a smoother, more youthful neckline to complement this definition.
The Nefertiti neck lift is named after the Ancient Egyptian Queen, Nefertiti, who was famed for her beautiful, slender neck.
3. Dermal fillers
Imaging studies have shown that the height and depth of the jawbone decreases in humans are we get older. This means that as well as losing elasticity, the soft tissues in the lower face lose structural support from the jawbone.
Together, this causes a less-defined jawbone and jowly skin.
Dermal fillers can used to address this issue, restoring or adding volume and definition to a weaker jawline or small chin. In addition, we can use dermal fillers in the cheeks, temples and in front of the ear, for example, to give your whole face more balance and symmetry.
4. Profhilo
Profhilo is an exciting injectable treatment that contains one of the highest levels of hyaluronic acid on the market.
Unlike dermal fillers, which also use hyaluronic acid, its formulation is thermally rather than chemically bonded. This allows Profhilo to act as a hydrator rather than as a filler, binding moisture within the skin to hydrate it and make it smoother. It also stimulates collagen and elastin production, which causes the skin to lift and become firmer over a period of several months.
Profhilo is particularly suitable for use along the jawline to address sagging skin and create a more sculpted, youthful look.
The treatment is administered over two sessions four weeks’ apart and can be repeated every six months to help you maintain and even further enhance the results.
5. Aqualyx
It’s common to develop a bit of a double chin as we get older. This can be caused by soft tissue and fat moving downwards from the face thanks to gravity, as well as some weight gain.
One treatment option is Aqualyx injections. These contain a compound solution made with polymers and a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is naturally present in the human body and plays a role in how we break down fats.
Aqualyx injections cause the fat in targeted cells to break down in order to be metabolised through the body’s lymphatic system and eliminated as waste.
This treatment works well in various areas of the body, including double chins. The results can be permanent but will need to be maintained with a healthy lifestyle.
Can you really define the jawline without surgery?
There are various cosmetic procedures to sculpt the jawline, from implants to shaving the bone, for example. These results may be more noticeable than non-surgical treatments. However, they come with the risks and downtime associated with surgery and it may not be possible to refine the results without further surgical procedures.
Non-surgical treatments can work well as individual treatments or by combining several different approaches to help you achieve your goals. Also, we love that there are treatment options to add symmetry and balance to other areas of your face to complement your rejuvenated jawline.
It’s also possible to maintain and refine the results with future treatments, plus some offer ongoing improvements to how your skin looks and feels. With Profhilo, for example, your skin should continue to look more youthful as the collagen and elastin production increases.
