Would you like your jawline to look more defined without having cosmetic surgery?
Some people naturally have a strongly defined jawline, while others have a softer transition between the face and neck. The appearance of your jawline can also change over time as the skin, fat, muscles and underlying bone change.
You might notice that your jawline looks softer than it once did, that jowls are beginning to appear or that a small pocket of fat beneath your chin is affecting the definition between your face and neck.
There isn’t one ideal jaw shape, and there isn’t a single treatment that’s right for everyone. The best approach depends on your natural facial structure, what’s affecting the appearance of your jawline and what you would personally like to change.
So, what are the non-surgical options?
1. Wrinkle-relaxing injections
The masseter muscles are strong muscles that run from the cheekbones to the lower jaw and play an important role in chewing.
In some people, the masseters are naturally prominent or become enlarged, creating greater width through the lower face. Carefully placed wrinkle-relaxing injections can temporarily reduce activity in these muscles and, over time, reduce some of their bulk. This can create a slimmer-looking lower face in suitable patients.
However, masseter treatment isn’t appropriate for everyone who wants a more defined jawline. Your existing facial structure, muscle size and the degree of skin laxity all need to be taken into account.
This is why we assess your face as a whole before recommending treatment rather than assuming that a slimmer jaw will necessarily create a better result.

2. Nefertiti neck lift
Sometimes, the appearance of the jawline is influenced by the muscles in the neck.
The platysma is a broad, thin sheet of muscle extending from the lower face and jaw down through the neck. As we age, the downward pull of this muscle can become more noticeable around the jawline, while vertical platysmal bands may become more visible in the neck.
A Nefertiti neck lift uses carefully placed wrinkle-relaxing injections to reduce the activity of selected areas of the platysma. In suitable patients, this can soften the downward pull and improve the appearance of definition around the jaw and neck.
The treatment takes its name from the Ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti, who is famously depicted with a long, slender and well-defined neck.
As with masseter treatment, suitability depends on your individual anatomy and what’s actually contributing to the changes you’ve noticed.
3. Dermal fillers
Your facial bones don’t remain the same throughout your life. As we age, gradual changes to the jawbone and other facial structures can alter the support available to the overlying soft tissues.
At the same time, changes to facial fat, collagen, elastin and skin can all affect the contours of the lower face.
For some people, strategically placed dermal fillers can add structure and definition to the chin or jawline. They can also be used in other areas of the face where appropriate to improve overall facial balance and proportions.
This doesn’t necessarily mean creating a dramatically sharper or larger jaw. Small, carefully considered changes can sometimes make a significant difference to how balanced and defined the lower face appears.
The amount and placement of filler will depend on your existing facial structure and the result you want to achieve.
4. Profhilo
Sometimes, it’s the quality and appearance of the skin around the lower face and neck rather than the underlying facial structure that’s causing concern.
Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment designed to improve skin hydration and the appearance of skin quality and firmness.
Unlike a dermal filler, Profhilo isn’t used to build or reshape the jawline. Instead, it is distributed within the skin, where it can help improve hydration and the appearance of mild skin laxity.
This means it may be an option if your main concern is that the skin around your lower face and neck looks less firm or smooth than it once did.
If you want greater structural definition of the chin or jaw itself, another treatment may be more appropriate. We’ll discuss this with you during your consultation.
5. Aqualyx
A small pocket of fat beneath the chin can soften the transition between the face and neck, making the jawline look less defined.
This can happen at different ages and body weights. Genetics and the way your body naturally distributes fat can play a part, so having some fullness beneath the chin doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re overweight.
Aqualyx is an injectable body-contouring treatment that can be used to reduce small, localised areas of fat, including beneath the chin.
Aqualyx isn’t a weight-loss treatment. Instead, it is intended for targeted areas where reducing localised fat could improve the contours of the treated area.
The treatment disrupts targeted fat cells, with the contents of the affected cells subsequently cleared naturally by the body over time.
If fullness beneath your chin is affecting your jawline, we’ll assess the area first to determine whether localised fat is actually the main cause and whether Aqualyx is a suitable option.
Can you really define your jawline without surgery?
Non-surgical aesthetic treatments can make a noticeable difference to the appearance of the jawline in the right person, but they can’t reproduce every result that can be achieved with cosmetic surgery.
More importantly, there isn’t one “best” non-surgical jawline treatment.
A jawline can look less defined for several different reasons. For one person, the main factor may be the natural shape of the chin or jaw. For another, it could be a small pocket of fat beneath the chin, changes in skin quality or the downward pull of muscles around the lower face and neck.
Sometimes one treatment is appropriate. In other cases, carefully combining different approaches may create a more balanced result.
This is why your consultation is important. Rather than starting with a particular treatment, we’ll look at your face as a whole, talk about what you would like to change and recommend an approach based on your individual features and aesthetic goals.
The aim isn’t to give you somebody else’s idea of the perfect jawline. It’s to help you achieve greater definition or balance in a way that still looks natural and feels like you.
