Dermal Fillers

FACIAL AND BODY ENHANCEMENTS

From our late 20s or early 30s onwards, most of us begin to notice that our skin looks less plump and defined than in the past, and that certain parts of the face, such as the cheeks, can begin to look quite hollow. This is because our skin starts to lose its natural supplies of hyaluronic acid – a hydrating and plumping agent that is found in the connective tissues of the skin – as well as collagen, elastin and subcutaneous fat cells, all of which are the building blocks of healthy, youthful skin.

HYALURONIC ACID DERMAL FILLERS TREATMENTS (RESTYLANE®, JUVEDERM®, BELOTERO®, TEOSYAL®)

Over time, these structural changes contribute to the loss of facial volume and the formation of static lines and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers comprise a synthetic gel that closely resembles naturally-produced hyaluronic acid. By injecting small quantities of dermal fillers into targeted lines, wrinkles and/or other areas of your face or body, we can help to restore your facial balance and volume, and reverse the signs of ageing.

Dermal fillers are ideal for rejuvenating and treating the following areas:

  • Forehead: Minimise the appearance of frown lines

  • Temples: Remove the hollows and shadows from your temples

  • Under eye: Improve the appearance of deep tear troughs, dark under-eye shadows and sunken eye appearance

  • Mid to lower face: Add volume and reduce the appearance of fine, medium and deep lines

  • Smile lines and smokers’ lines: Smooth the appearance of lines around the mouth

  • Brow and jowl lifting: Create lift and definition

  • Cheek and nose contouring: Create symmetry and balance without surgery (including a non-surgical rhinoplasty)

  • Jaw and chin sculpting: Create more youthful definition

  • Acne scar reduction: Fill in deep scars to improve their appearance

  • Lips: Shape, rebalance and plump

  • Skin boosters: Improve the hydration and texture in the face, neck, décolletage, hands, elbow, knees and under-eye area

DERMAL FILLERS FAQS

How long does a dermal fillers treatment take?

Dermal filler treatments take just 15 to 30 minutes to administer.

Will the treatment hurt?

Most of the dermal fillers we offer include lidocaine to give you a comfortable, pain-free treatment. However, if lidocaine is contraindicated for any reason, we have safe alternatives.

The single-use needles we use to administer dermal fillers are very fine and we only use tiny amounts of the product, which is why it is such a quick and largely pain-free treatment. If you are worried about how the injections will feel, you can opt to have an anaesthetic cream applied to your skin approximately half an hour before your treatment to numb your skin.

Is one treatment enough to show results?

Absolutely. Just one procedure can help to give your skin back some of its youthful volume and definition in the treatment area. We will typically arrange to see you for a follow-up appointment two weeks after your treatment so that we can check the results.

As the effects of the treatment are temporary, you may find that you need one or two further treatments each year to maintain the desired aesthetic effects.

How quickly should I see the results?

With dermal filler treatments, the changes to your appearance will be instant, although you will continue to see further improvements to your skin’s volume over the next few days as the dermal fillers settle fully.

Are dermal fillers safe?

In the hands of an experienced medical professional, dermal fillers are incredibly safe and backed by years of proven use and clinical studies. However, it is important to be aware of the potential side effects (see below), which we will discuss with you in detail during your initial consultation.

We only ever deliver injections from a single-use vial using single-use needles to ensure that you receive treatment with a product that is fresh, undiluted and free from risk of contamination.

What are the potential side effects?

Most people find dermal filler treatments to be relatively painless to mildly uncomfortable. The most immediate and common side effect is slight bleeding at the injection site. You may also experience mild bruising, tenderness, redness and swelling, which can take two to three days to resolve completely, especially in the lip area were the skin is particularly sensitive.

Rarely, allergic-type reactions can occur after dermal fillers. Side effects can include prolonged redness, swelling, itching, and/or hardness and bumps in the skin. There have been cases where these issues have taken several months to resolve.

If you have a history of cold sores, dermal fillers can cause an outbreak. It’s best to tell us in advance if you’re prone to cold sores, so that we can prescribe a preventative treatment of anti-herpes medicine.

Very occasionally, people have experienced delayed side effects months after their first dermal fillers treatment. These side effects usually appear as red lumps under the skin, and can be permanent, but evidence would suggest that they are more likely to be associated with permanent fillers than with temporary hyaluronic acid fillers.

A study by Lazzeri, published in April 2012, found evidence that a handful of patients throughout the world had experienced blindness because cosmetic injections including dermal fillers had been injected incorrectly. This is why it is so important to choose an experienced practitioner with a medical background and extensive training in dermal fillers, as this will help to minimise potential risks and side effects.

Is there anything I should do/not do after dermal fillers?

When you come in to Medikaur Skin & Aesthetics for a treatment with dermal fillers, we will give you detailed aftercare instructions. It’s important that you follow our recommendations to enjoy the full benefit of your treatment.

We may recommend that you:

  • Use ice packs to help reduce swelling (although this is not usually necessary)

  • Take painkillers such as paracetamol, if required, for a few days post-treatment

  • Take arnica tablets for a few days before and after your treatment to minimise any bruising

  • Contact us if bruising or swelling persists, or if any blistering occurs

  • Contact us if any delayed reactions occur

Can anyone administer dermal fillers?

The manufacturers of dermal fillers recommend that they are only administered by suitably qualified and experienced medical practitioners. Therefore, you should seek treatment from a nurse, GP, cosmetic doctor, dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or dentist.

Here at Medikaur Skin & Aesthetics, dermal fillers are administered by Jane Paterson, who is a popular and immensely experienced advanced aesthetic nurse practitioner, or Dr Gurpreet Gill.

What dermal fillers do you use at Medikaur Skin &Aesthetics?

We will talk to you in depth about the different products during your consultation so that you can make a fully informed decision about your treatment. As a rough guide, we currently use dermal fillers from Restylane®, Juvederm®, Belotero®, and Teosyal®.
